Summary: Research copies of papers gathered this material during his research for Eugene Tidball's book "Soldier-Artist of the Great Reconnaissance: John C. Tidball and the 35th Parallel Railroad Survey." Included are photocopies of part of Lt. Whipple's journal, a copy of D.S. Stanley's diary and documents related to John Sherburne (members of the Whipple Expedition), and copies of sketches and lithograph drawings used in the report of the expedition and in Tidball's book. There is also a master's thesis by Rosal Mangiante entitled "History of Fort Defiance, 1851-1900" and a copy of John C. Tidball's memoir entitled "Itinerary" which is reproduced in the published book. Two rolls of microfilm contain the Whipple Journal and Fort Defiance post returns.

Eugene C. Tidball graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1948. He attended the University of Montana, Missoula receiving his B.S., B.A., and J.D. by 1955. He worked briefly for the Tirgood Oil Company of Casper, Wyoming before becoming executive director of the Montana Legislative Council in 1957, a position he held until 1965.
